In Search of Ancient Astronauts (1973)
Directed By: Harald Reinl
Written By: Erich von Däniken (Chariots of the Gods)
Cast:
Rod Serling as Narrator
Plot:

In this documentary based on the teachings of Erich von Daniken the viewer is asked to believe that every ancient
civilization was visited by beings from another world. Sound far fetched? Let me explain further. You see almost all
artifacts from those past civilizations was either inspired by Aliens or were made by them. Still not convinced?  Do
these ideas seem ridiculous? Well if your hoping that the film In Search of Ancient Astronauts would provide you
with hard evidence of Earth being visited by Spacemen you'll be sadly disappointed. Never have Earth's mysteries
been explained in such an unconvincing manner.

The film dances across the globe from one ancient ruin to another and back again in attempts to show a mountain
of evidence of Alien visitation and influence. Ancient artifacts are shown one after the other to show their unearthly
designs and the audience is expected to believe that they were all made to represent space travelers. Every round
head is supposed to represent a space helmet. Every statue an Alien. Every abandoned city a colony for visitors
from the stars. All presented in a matter of fact series of clips. Is it possible that the ancients practiced abstract
art? Could the ancients have been creative artists who used exaggeration of form? Could they have created
mythical creatures that never really existed like every other civilization? If you believe in the film makers evidence
than the answer is no.

Cinema Insomnia's Version Of IN SEARCH OF ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS

Any good comedian can find humor in almost any situation. This one was all to easy for Mr.Lobo. How does he
handle this documentary for the week minded? He takes us on his own personal search for the truth that's how.
First stop Area 51. Many of you may be interested to know that due to The Freedom Of Information Actthe phone
number for this once top secret base is now just a call to 411 away. Mr. Lobo was amazed. His visit to the infamous
den of our nations secrets proved to be even more puzzling. Did he find the remains of the crashed UFO that
many experts believe is housed at the base? Well no. It's not that Mr. Lobo didn't look, but it would be hard to see
through the mass of junked cars. You see this once secret military installation more resembles an auto salvage
yard than a test facility for top secret projects. As you can see the general public had been lied to once again? Or
have they? Puzzling.

Lobo's quest would not end there. Oh no. He, just like the film, would dash across the globe to visit the sites in
question to dig up his own evidence. Did he find any? That's up to interpretation. Puzzling.

Mr. Lobo did manage to get himself abducted by aliens and earn $20 for services rendered. Or did he? Puzzling.

The conclusion. Has Earth been visited by Aliens? Are they our ancestors? Did they help shape ancient
civilizations? Well.....sure....maybe. I guess it's all up to interpretation.

Thoughts:

Mr. Lobo does it again. This is so far the funniest episode of Cinema Insomnia. Lobo's performance is great blend
of satire and physical comedy. The whole team really put something special together for this episode.

Readers may be interested to learn that the episode was shot under a rushed schedule and that Mr. Lobo told me
that they were all running around like crazy during the location shots. It doesn't show in the episode though. It just
goes to prove that sometimes the funniest material will come from most hectic of situations. Such is the case here.

Also of note are the wonderful movie trailers and a great interview with Chase Masterson (Leeta on DS9) that are
also included in this episode.
Trivia:

The film was shot as a pilot episode for the TV series IN SEARCH OF that was hosted by Leonard Nimoy
